WIP: HaroPla Haro - Penguin

Inspiration:

I've usually found Haros to be cute, cheerful characters. Their inherent roundness makes them good comedic characters with a lot of personality. I also like birds, stemming from my family having parakeets for a few years now. When a someone on YouTube ran the "Balls for Balls" contest, I decided that it would be a good time to purchase a Haro from Discount Hobby Warehouse in San Diego, CA.

My original intention was to paint this kit in a lighter shade of blue that would match our wedding colors, but it seemed too simple. After some thought, I had the idea to make the Haro look like a round birb. After finding a suitable lineart file that would be compatible with Microsoft Paint, I came up with two color schemes and multiple layouts. With the help of my wife, I decided to go for the Penguin color scheme with the hoodie layout.

Process:

    Assembly & Modifications:

In terms of Gunpla kits, this is a basic model with little color separation and articulation, by design. The flaps and feet both move and it should be pretty simple to take care of any seam lines. There is some mechanical detail underneath that you can pick out, but only a clear shell will show it off. The kit comes with a display stand that allows you to store the extended arms and feet.

    Painting:

        Colors:

  • Mission Models White Primer
  • craftsmart Acrylic Paint White
  • craftsmart Acrylic Paint Black
  • craftsmart Acrylic Paint Turquoise
  • craftsmart Acrylic Paint Bright Orange
  • craftsmart Acrylic Paint Dark Grey
  • Future Floor Polish/Pledge Floor Gloss
  • Vallejo Matte Varnish

I airbrushed Mission Models White Primer on all the pieces to give me a good solid base to work off of.

I sprayed Acrylic Paint Turquoise on the eyes and other details for the eyes

Sprayed acrylic Black paint over the body.

After masking the beak, I sprayed acrylic Bright Orange for the legs and beak.

Removed the mask off to see a preview of my work,

A quick test assembly to see what it looks like all together.

Cleaned up the kit some and took some final photos.

Stay tuned for the post with all the finished photos.

The pictures above were taken with a Samsung Galaxy S9+.
